Fishing glossary: terms and definitions
A public reference, not reviews or a booking service. Definitions are explanatory, not current legal rules.
Fish species
A group of fish identified by a shared scientific classification. Common names can vary; scientific names help distinguish species.
Fish habitat
The water and surrounding environment a fish uses for feeding, shelter, spawning or growth. Habitat descriptions are not reports of a current catch.
Freshwater fishing
Fishing in waters with little dissolved salt, such as lakes, rivers and ponds. Applicable Florida rules depend on the species and waterbody.
Saltwater fishing
Fishing in marine and coastal waters. Consult current Florida regulations for species-specific and area-specific requirements.
Brackish water
Water that mixes freshwater and saltwater, often where rivers meet coastal waters. Salinity can change with tides and rainfall.
Estuary
A coastal waterbody where freshwater and seawater mix. Estuaries can provide feeding and nursery habitat for fish.
Inshore fishing
Fishing in relatively sheltered coastal waters, including bays, flats and estuaries. The term alone does not specify an exact distance from shore.
Offshore fishing
Fishing farther from shore in open marine waters. An offshore label does not establish a precise location, depth or departure point.
Tide
The periodic rise and fall of sea level, driven mainly by the gravitational effects of the moon and sun. Tide predictions are not weather forecasts.
Water current
Movement of water in a particular direction. Tidal currents, river flow and wind-driven currents can affect fishing and safe access.
Peak fishing season
Months marked as peak in a species source record. This is guide information, not a live forecast or a guarantee of catching fish.
Good fishing season
Months marked as good in a species source record, distinct from peak months. Actual conditions and legal harvest rules can differ.
Fishing bait
Natural material used to attract fish to a hook, including live or prepared bait. Availability and permitted use depend on current rules and local conditions.
Fishing lure
An artificial fishing bait designed to attract a fish through movement, shape, sound or appearance.
Boat ramp
A sloped access structure used to launch or retrieve a boat. A listed ramp is not a guarantee of public access, current opening hours or suitable water depth.
Marina
A facility with boat berths or docks and potentially other boating amenities. A marina association is not a verified charter departure address.
Fishing charter
A fishing trip operated by a third-party boat operator or captain. LoveToFish lists source-backed operator records; it does not sell or arrange charter trips.
Bag limit
A legal limit on the number of fish a person may retain, subject to the applicable species, place and time rules. Always check the current official regulation.
Size limit
A legal restriction on the size of fish that may be retained. The required measurement method and any exceptions depend on the current regulation.
Closed fishing season
A period when specified fishing or harvest activity is restricted under a regulation. A biological peak season is not permission to harvest fish.
Catch and release
Returning a caught fish to the water rather than retaining it. Follow official handling guidance and any applicable species-specific requirements.
Fishing record
A recorded catch achievement with supporting details such as species, weight, date and location. A source-listed historical record is not a current catch report.
Source record
A catalog entry backed by an identified source. It may be incomplete or out of date; the original source should be checked before relying on changing details.
Official reference sources
Plain-language editorial definitions, not quotations. Check current official rules.
